F14-11/6: It’s JUST a Text Box!

Track/s: Strategy

Have you ever stopped to consider the depth and breadth of testing that could go into such a ‘simple’ control?
In an attempt to understand the truism “You never finish testing, you just stop testing.”; let’s see how much trouble we can get into with ‘just’ a text box. We will talk through some of the possible testing approaches to reduce almost any text box to a quivering mass and cause developers to run away screaming. This is not a recommendation that anyone become a specialized text box assassin; but rather an eye-opening exercise on just how much could be done with an infinite amount of time and focused expertise.

Session Takeaways:

  • An overview of the conventional and non-conventional ways a lowly text box can be spindled, folded and mutilated.
  • A high-level understanding of technical approaches to perform testing such as SQL, XML, and XPath Injection and data types and their sizes; though you will not be exposed to all of the intricacies of these various approaches.
  • Introduction to high ASCII, double-byte characters, escape codes and more of my favorite text tricks.
  • The foundation necessary to continue on these testing paths to gain more depth on your own.
